چکیده
A recent report on gravitational wave detector data from the NAUTILUS and EXPLORER detector groups claims a statistically significant excess of coincident events when the detectors are oriented in a way that maximizes their sensitivity to gravitational wave sources in the galactic plane. While not claiming a detection of gravitational waves, they do strongly suggest that the origin of the excess is of gravitational wave origin. In this note we show that the statistical analysis that led them to the conclusion that there is a statistical excess is flawed and that the reported observation is entirely consistent with the normal Poisson statistics of the reported detector background. ‡ Also Center for Gravitational Physics and Geometry, Department of Physics and Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics; e-mail [email protected] No statistical excess 2

We recently published an analysis of the coincidences of the Explorer and Nautilus gravitational wave detectors in the year 2001 [1]. This has drawn attention and criticism by Professor S.Finn [2]. We discuss here why we do not agree with his arguments and conclusions, taking the opportunity to make some further considerations on our data.

We report the result from a search for bursts of gravitational waves using data collected by the cryogenic resonant detectors EXPLORER and NAUTILUS during the year 2001, for a total measuring time of 90 days. With these data we repeated the coincidence search performed on the 1998 data (which showed a small coincidence excess) applying data analysis algorithms based on known physical characteri...

The recently published analysis of the coincidences between the EXPLORER and NAUTILUS gravitational wave detectors in the year 2001 [1] has drawn some criticism [2]. We do not hold with these objections, even if we agree that no claim can be made with our data. The paper we published reports data of unprecedented quality and sets a new procedure for the coincidence search, which can be repeated...

Bayesian reasoning is applied to the data by the ROG Collaboration, in which grav-itational wave (g.w.) signals are searched for in a coincidence experiment between Explorer and Nautilus. The use of Bayesian reasoning allows, under well defined hypotheses , even tiny pieces of evidence in favor of each model to be extracted from the data. The combination of the data of several experiments can t...
